The Government of Tamil Nadu graciously provides a complimentary spiritual journey to esteemed Perumal (Lord Vishnu) temples throughout the state, primarily aimed at senior citizens. This noble initiative is orchestrated by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department in partnership with the Tourism Department. Its purpose is to assist elderly devotees who may lack the resources or physical capability to visit significant temples independently. The tour is generally held during the Tamil month of Purattasi (from mid-September to mid-October), a period regarded as exceptionally auspicious for Vishnu devotees, particularly on Saturdays.
To partake in this complimentary tour, interested parties must fulfill certain eligibility requirements. The scheme is accessible to Hindu senior citizens aged between 60 and 70 years. Applicants are required to be in good physical health and able to travel. Those suffering from chronic health issues that could impede travel may not qualify. Preference is extended to individuals from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and those who have not previously engaged in such tours.
The application procedure is straightforward yet must be completed within a specified timeframe. Application forms are available at the offices of the Zonal Joint Commissioners of the HR&CE Department in various locales, including Chennai, Kanchipuram, Trichy, Madurai, Villupuram, Thanjavur, and Tirunelveli. Applicants are required to accurately complete the form with personal details such as name, age, address, Aadhaar number, and emergency contact information.
Alongside the application form, a number of documents must be submitted. These documents consist of a copy of the Aadhaar card or any government-issued identification to verify identity and age, a recent passport-sized photograph, and a medical fitness certificate from a licensed medical professional. In certain instances, a self-declaration form indicating that the applicant has not previously participated in the complimentary tour may also be necessary.
Upon submission of the application and accompanying documents, the HR&CE Department will review them and select qualified candidates. Those chosen will be informed via phone or local announcements and will receive information regarding the tour, including the date, reporting time, and pickup location. The tour is organized in groups, with transportation facilitated by government-provided buses. Some tours may accommodate as many as 1,000 participants, organized into various zones for more efficient management.
During the tour, participants will visit several renowned Perumal temples within their respective areas. For instance, in the Chennai zone, the itinerary may feature visits to the Parthasarathy Temple in Triplicane, the Ashtalakshmi Temple in Besant Nagar, and the Sthalasayana Perumal Temple in Mahabalipuram. Typically, the tour is completed within a single day. Devotees will be offered vegetarian meals, drinking water, and support throughout the journey. Trained staff and volunteers will accompany the pilgrims to ensure their safety and comfort.
